“Hollow” begins

Graphic by Elaine McMillion

Since January, I’ve been involved in the planning stages of “Hollow,” an interactive documentary planned to launch on the web in May 2013. The documentary, which will be about the McDowell County, W.Va., community, by the community, will be housed on an HTML5 website. The project –  which has eight native West Virginians, including myself, working on it – will strive to be about place.

In the months since January, the talented filmmaker and project director Elaine McMillion, others with the project and I have made connections with McDowell natives and West Virginia officials, conducted outreach, ran a successful Kickstarter campaign, and we are now descending upon the region to begin production.

I leave my full-time job on June 1 and will begin traveling to McDowell County on the weekends in the days after. I will continue to update readers as production continues. Updates are also available on our Facebook page.

I’m excited to get down to meet the people of McDowell County. I know in the two weeks Elaine has been there she has had an amazing time. The next year will be amazing.
